PROGRAMME AIMS
The BA combines the study of the Spanish language with aspects of Spanish and Latin American culture from the medieval period to the present day. You'll gain skills in reading, writing and speaking Spanish. Optional units include art, film, and political and historical writing. Emphasis is also placed on ways of reading texts, in order to develop your analytical and critical skills.

BA Spanish and Latin American Studies
Students who demonstrate a native or near-native speaker competence in Spanish at the entrance test (see page 41) will be required to replace ‘Spanish language 1’ with either a further introductory unit or a specialised option.
From October 2007, a Language Marking Service will be available exclusively for students studying for the BA in Spanish and Latin American Studies with the University of London
External System. Full details of the service, together with practice exercises for each of the four language components offered on the degree, will be circulated.

The BA offers you the opportunity to study the French language from its origin to the present day; French literature; and the social, political and economic institutions of France. You're expected to gain an outstanding facility in reading, writing and speaking
French, but also, and principally, a trained mind. In addition, you'll develop the confidence which comes with appraising intellectual issues, articulating your own conclusions by developing an independent and enterprising spirit.

The Diploma in English
The Diploma in English, which was introduced in 1996, has been developed following the success of the BA English. The Diploma will appeal to two different kinds of student. Firstly, there are those who would like a University of London award in English, but do not feel ready to commit themselves to studying for a full
degree programme. Secondly, there are students who do not satisfy the University’s entrance requirements for the degree. The Diploma gives these students the opportunity to gain access to the degree if their Diploma studies are successful.

You will study a range of literary and other works written in different styles and periods; from this study you will develop an awareness of changing rhetorical techniques and effects, as well as greater knowledge of many literary works.
The study of English is concerned with questions of meaning, social behaviour and structure, as well as with problems of aesthetic and cultural value. Your work directs you not only towards a wide range of examples of writing but also towards greater awareness of moral and social questions, surrounding the techniques through which analysis and persuasion are achieved.
You will develop a broad range of skills, including general communicative competence as well as more technical skills of literary-critical analysis.
The key skills gained should provide a sound basis for a range
of careers including the civil service, teaching, research, media
and business.
Note: These awards are specifically concerned with the study of English literature and it is assumed that prospective students will already be fluent in spoken and written English. The programme contains no element of training in language proficiency.
Transfer to the BA English
If you obtain the Diploma in English you may transfer your registration to the BA English and be automatically credited with the papers passed in the Diploma. In effect, you will go on to the advanced units of the BA English and will be able to complete the degree in a minimum of two further years. You should note that a student registered for the BA English who passes the foundation units cannot be awarded the Diploma in English
CERTIFICATE IN BILINGUAL SKILLS (CBS)

RELEVANCE
A practical, vocational alternative to a traditional "A" level, for all those working in the public or voluntary sector and who wish to use their language skills in their workplace.
All tasks in the examination are based on real-life situations in a public service context (Local Government, Health Service, Social Services, etc.)
POTENCIAL
Demonstrates proven capability in English and other languages at foundation level. Whether already employed or looking for a new career you will be qualified to use your language skills, improving your career prospects.
A useful starting point for those wishing to become professional interpreters. The CBS is a stepping stone towards the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI), a higher, professional level examination offered by the IoLET.

DIPLOMA IN TRANSLATION (DipTrans)
The Diploma in Translation (DipTrans) was introduced in 1989 as a benchmark of professional standards and has since continued to meet the needs for a high level professional translating qualification.
It is a postgraduate level equivalent qualification intended to test the ability of those who wish to progress into careers as freelance translators or work for corporations worldwide, to a professional standard.

RECOGNITION
Holders of the Diploma in Translation will be granted exemption from Module 6 (Translation Project) of the MA in Translation Studies at Birmingham University.
The Diploma in Translation is also recognised by the Open University and credit is awarded in the form of 60 points at level 2 with BA designation.
Students who attain a mark of 65% or more in the Annotated Translation Project of the MA in Applied Translation Studies at London Metropolitan University will be moderated by IoLET with a view to granting exemption from Paper 2 or 3 (semi-specialised translation) of the Diploma in Translation. Students who attain a mark of 65% or more in the Translation Project & Commentary of the BA (Hons) in Applied Translation at London Metropolitan University will be moderated by IoLET with a view to granting exemption from Paper 1 (General Translation Paper) of the Diploma in Translation
